FAQ

Why do I need a Grease Recovery Unit?

Grease buildup within a building’s drainage system is a major cause of serious drain blockages. Blocked drains jeopardize normal operations and create health and safety hazards within the facility. Installing a Big Dipper Automatic or Trapzilla hydromechanical System can eliminate problems caused by grease.

What is a Grease Trap?

A grease trap is a receptacle that kitchen wastewater flows through before entering the sanitary sewer lines. This receptacle captures, or “traps” grease. How? Grease, the industry term for animal fats and vegetable oils, is 10 to 15% less dense than water. Grease is immiscible with water, they do not mix. Thus, fat, oil and grease float on water.
When kitchen wastewater flows through a grease trap, the fat, oil and grease rise to the surface and are trapped inside the receptacle using a system of baffles. The captured fat, oil and grease fills the trap from the top down, displacing “clean” water from the bottom of the trap into the sanitary sewer line. This is why you see a grease “mat” when observing a grease trap. When a significant layer of grease has accumulated, the trap must be pumped out.

What is a Point Source Grease Removal unit?

These units are designed to treat single fixtures such as a three compartment sink or pre-rinse station. Big Dipper Point Source Grease Traps are typically found under a work table in fast food and full-service restaurants, delis, schools, supermarkets and similar establishments.

What is The Big Dipper?

The Thermaco, Inc. Big Dipper® Automatic Fat, oil and grease Removal System removes free-floating fat, oil and grease from kitchen drain water flows. The Big Dipper 51,000 Series is the first fully sealed Automatic Grease Trap in the world, helping eliminate odours associated with other automatic grease traps.
Using the the Big Dipper helps avoid costly sewer surcharges and fines through efficient separation and removal of free-floating fat, oil and grease at source.
The Big Dipper also eliminates pumping and disposal costs associated with conventional grease traps. The recovered fat, oil and grease is substantially water-free and is ideal for recycling by local rendering or biodiesel companies.

What is the Trapzilla?

TrapZilla is a truly revolutionary grease trap. TrapZilla is our answer to the passive and hydromechanical grease traps on the market. Trapzilla is a hydromechanical grease trap. TrapZilla’s innovative design makes it 70% more efficient than any similar sized passive or hydromechanical grease trap on the market.
As Trapzilla can retain 85% of its volume before it needs to be pumped out, it dramatically reduces pump out costs.
